Something to keep in mind. My understanding is that earlier Vanagons/Westies used a single wire/common ground for the ground on the rear speakers. Later models ran separate grounds. And newer receivers can handle the separate grounds where earlier radios used the common ground setup. So on your '83 you have the chance to upgrade the speaker wiring.
