engine fully assembled or apart ?

if it's a running engine .. I don't recommend going 'too nutty' with cleaner additives at all. Sometimes youcan push something that is tired over the edge .. and turn it from something that was working, into something that leaks or whatever.

I do use hydrualic lifter cleaner additives sometimes. Seafoam is a great product , in general.
