That is the right approach but instead of putting in full 4.5 only put in 4 quarts. Then mark that spot for low, after running the engine and letting it sit for a couple minutes. Then add the other .5 then run/rest again, before marking the full level. Keep the oil between these marks going forward. Of course this should done on a pretty level surface, as should checking the oil in general.

Eventually you would be best off by installing the 83+ diesel Vanagon dipstick assembly so you can check from the license plate door. The block hole is not the same on 1.9 as the 1.6 so you would need to check and mark that stick as needed in the same fashion as above.
