I have a HF(7-function), Craftsman and Fluke. The HF is handy (small) to throw in the carry around toolbox. The Craftsman and Fluke stay around the house. One thing I noticed while using the Craftsman when checking for resistance through the Syncro wiring, it would read a couple of tenths of resistance, no matter what I did to minimize the resistance. I decide to check the same wire with the HF and Fluke. Both measured zero resistance. Goes to show you that price of unit is not necessarily a sign of accuracy. BTW, the HF was free with a minimum purchase ($9.95?); look for the HF ads at the stores or sign up for the mail ads. I think the Craftsman unit was $19.95. All of mine are digital.

This is a tools post, so I hope the mods approve it off-Frydae.

The recent post on an LED voltmeter got me thinking about buying a multimeter.

On Amazon they have them both digital and analog, ranging in price from under $10 to close to $200 (Fluke brand).  Of course, Harbor Freight has quite a few as well.

Would anyone care to make a recommendation on a mid-range price tool?  Not too cheap but not the very expensive professional quality.  Digital vs. analog?  Ranges?  What else to look for, or cautionary lessons written in blood or wasted scarce dollars.

It would be good to have one tool for both vanagon and household use.

The archives had a few posts when a Craftsman model went on sale.  I remember trying to buy that one, but the special price went away quickly.

Will this be like a tire thread?

Thanks, Anthony '89 Syncro GL (Hidalgo)
