I only managed 35k miles from my rebuild from a very popular rebuilder. It was behind an EJ22. Upon sending it back to him for inspection he had all sorts of excuses like I must have been off-roading because of the red dirt found on the case. From day one the shift lever would move in 4th gear when on/off the throttle, I pointed this out to him early on and he said don't worry about it. Well, guess what? The rebuild failed with a wallowed out main bearing bore, along with a bad pinion bearing. He offered to rebuild it again at no discount, and would not give full credit for the core either as the case was wallowed out. I said no thanks and left the core with him, as I just wanted to cut my losses. Subsequently I got a Rancho rebuild with beefed up components for a few hundred less than the original rebuilder wanted to charge. It's been working excellent. All that said these transaxles have a rough life in a Vanagon. If the original rebuilder had explained it via this route rather than the blame game I'd have a different opinion of him.
