All I can add is there are (at least?) 2 different sized plugs. I got caught by that when I found one at the wreckers to replace mine (fridge, '82. led not a meter, 182B? - I can never keep the numbers straight.)

FWIW, I did for a couple of years with no plug, I don't recall any problems not having one.
