My father moved the U505 across the Chicago Loop between midnight and six am to get her to the Museum. When I visited her in 1970 it was frustrating because they had guards moving people through at a rapid clip.

If you're ever in Portsmouth NH visit the Albacore 569 - unarmed test-bed boat, holds world submerged-speed record. Many interesting things tried first on Albacore including the hull shape (ok, Holland did that first, but Albacore was the first modern boat whose hull was a body of revolution). Unlike Nautilus in New London CT there aren't any plastic cages to keep you bottled up. The docents are sailors from boats undergoing overhaul in the Yard; unfortunately they know nothing about Albacore as such, though they're knowledgeable about the nuc boats.
