Bernie, that sounds like a guy named Wendell from the SF Bay area. We ran into him several times in Baja in his white 87 Westy Syncro, camped on the beach.

As for your wife, perhaps you could make the Westy into something she would be more comfortable in. A hightop conversion perhaps, and getting rid of the closet so the lower bed is more spacious. In case you haven't heard the Adventurewagen tops are being produced again near Toronto and you can get one installed at a couple different places on the West Coast.
