Wash the tank with a solution of chlorine bleach (1cup bleach in 1 gallon of water), then rinse thoroughly with clean water until no chlorine smell remains.  Then fill the tank with clean water treated with 1 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water.  Bleach should be 5.25% sodium hypochlorite straight bleach, no perfumes or other additives.  If you are using city water that is safe to drink at home, it is not necessary to add bleach if the tank has been cleaned and treated with bleach.   If the tank is clean and sanitized, and the water is sanitized, there is no reason not to drink it.  I drink water from my tank all the time.  mcneely
