What I do is to drain the tank then refill, adding a couple of ounces of household bleach. I drive around a few days with that sloshing around in the tank, then drain it and re-fill. Drive with that a bit, then drain and fill again...and use that water as "good water"....I sometimes make coffee from that tank, I even drink it (rarely) when I am really thirsty and out of other water... Depending on how long I've gone between fillings of the tank, I repeat the bleach douche before I really trust that water for human consumption..

I usually keep my drinking and cooking water in gallon bottles, filled from good sources and kept fresh.
