Southernmost point of Hawaii is just shy of 19° North. https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=18.91094,-155.681135&spn=0.002948,0.004823&sll=29.548372,-90.682526&sspn=0.347053,0.617294&t=h&z=18

Southernmost point of Texas is about 415 nautical miles further north. https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=25.826162,-97.385216&spn=0.179547,0.308647&sll=29.548372,-90.682526&sspn=0.347053,0.617294&t=h&z=12

But Key West, Florida is only 338 nautical miles north, still a respectable margin. https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=24.544625,-81.807461&spn=0.090723,0.154324&sll=29.548372,-90.682526&sspn=0.347053,0.617294&t=h&z=13

But Puerto Rico's southern point is sixty nautical miles south of Hawaii's. https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=17.926884,-66.925707&spn=0.023723,0.038581&sll=29.548372,-90.682526&sspn=0.347053,0.617294&t=h&z=15

And Guam is another 280 nm south of Puerto Rico. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=guam&hl=en&ll=13.23794,144.649086&spn=0.048543,0.077162&sll=17.929498,-66.927681&sspn=0.047446,0.077162&t=h&hnear=Guam&z=14

Nautical miles are easy because they're sixty per degree of latitude. People who favor statute miles can apply a factor of 6080/5280, or for kilometers use 6080/3281. For smoots use 6080/5.5833....**

**No immediate relation to Senator Smoot so far as I know.

Senator Smoot (Republican, Ut.) Is planning a ban on smut Oh rooti-ti-toot for Smoot of Ut. And his reverent occiput. Smite. Smoot, smite for Ut., Grit your molars and do your dut., Gird up your l–ns, Smite h-p and th-gh, We’ll all be Kansas By and By.
