It was the fuel hose leading to the injector. If you look at the bottom picture at http://www.csp-dev.com/vw/fi1.html you'll see how the hose connects. I had no idea how to remove this hose even if I could at the time of failure. The easiest option was to replace it with a working spare that I had in my parts bag. Ken at Vanagain shows how to remove and replace this hose is his YouTube video. And no, a 3 year old fuel injector hose should not have failed.

I haven't read the entire thread, but could a fault (intermittent short?) in the harness cause a FI to fail? Like the short could fry the windings in the FI?

Not to say that there wasn't a QC issue with the FI. Just a "heads up" question of sorts.
