I agree with Jeff that there is a bit of a bubble in Van prices at the
moment.  Some folks are trying to cash in on it.  The funny part is that I
have seen these types of ads, dismissed them out of hand only to get a call
from someone who just bought the same overpriced "project" asking how much
it would cost to restore it so that it could be sold.  They think that
since GW can restore and sell a Syncro Westy for $125k, they should be able
to get at least $20k for their restored 82 Westy.

While the prices have risen dramatically in the last couple of years (I
speak from personal experience of selling Vanagons on the East Coast), the
idea that a normal person with no reputation can buy a Vanagon Camper, pay
someone else to fully restore it, then have a high enough of a selling
price to make money off of the deal, is a stretch.  Part of the reason why
GW can sell vans for such a high price is their reputation and the
thousands of dollars they spend on advertising each year.  It takes money
to make money.

Conclusion, buy a Vanagon or Westy that is in nice shape to use and enjoy.
 Most likely when you go to sell it in a few years it will be worth more
than what you paid for it if you keep it in nice shape.  A good investment
any way you look at it.
