Hi Jeff, I've just been reading this thread with interest. I'm in Sydney Australia. I have an '82 2L aircooled. About two weeks ago we had the heaviest rain we've had all year. Bus wouldn't start. Charged the battery, cranked and cranked, bus wouldn't start. Re-charged the battery, cranked and cranked - bus wouldn't start. Then I gave up (poor bus). Obviously this effort ran over a few days (takes a while to trickle charge the battery). Throughout this time, it kept on raining... Something I noticed during my cranking efforts was: (i) The was no smell of petrol (gasoline) (ii) There were no half-drowned pops or backfires Because of this, I suspected that there may be water/ sufficient moisture getting to the fuel pump connectors to cause a short. It was my best theory. I would have liked it more if the bus had been driving around and could have had a big splash to the underside (it hadn't). Anyway, two days after the rain stopped, turned the key and the bus started instantly (well almost instantly - she is 31). So now checking the fuel pump connectors is on my 'to do' list (it's funny how you de-prioritize things)...
