When that happened on one of my earlier vans - air-cooled, long before I really knew much about them - I used a sparking plug to fill the hole. Ran it that way until I sold it. As I recall, there was just enough thread to catch, and the plug was ever so slightly bigger - so it cut in as it was screwed in. Long time a go - details are a bit fuzzy now, but it worked.
