Not likely you wired it backwards but if you did reversing the wires externally should take care of it.

The fan will blow air whichever direction it spins, but it will blow more air when spinning in the right direction.

What's more likely is that one or both of the free-hanging flap doors that let ram air bypass the fan is jammed open or has fallen off completely. They are unfortunately designed to fail, and you may have precipitated an incipient failure when you were in there.

Also unfortunately I don't know any way to deal with them other than opening up the box. The faint glimmer of sunshine is that ram air will still work just fine.
