The lamp holder is covered by a thin rubber sleeve that extends all the way to the back of the external part of the fitting. You can get a screwdriver tip under the lip and start it moving; it then comes off pretty easily. There's enough slack in the wires for the boot to come off completely.

But now your troubles are beginning. If you have good spatial perception I'll describe what you'll find; otherwise you'll be better off getting help.
