Sounds like the problem is the ball/spring assembly on the shift lever. These are still available from list vendors. It's an easy job.

While you are looking at the shift mechanism, check the bushings all the way back. Grease, refurbish/replace...

Then read the Bentley about adjustments - that will be crucial after everything is back together.
