FWIW I have done this on diesels and waterboxers with a chain hoiust (the ratcheting kind) and a metal saw horse. I cut two by fours to sit across the compartment, and into the tops of them I drilled shallow pockets for the legs of the sawhorse to go into so they would not slide around and because it is not always convenient to put the legs where the metal is and have a safe setup. I have used those two by fours for almost ten years now.
