Subject:      Ontario Propane Tanks - Response from the TSSA

When I sent out the email to the list regarding filling Vanagon tanks in
Ontario I also reached out to the TSSA, the regulatory body. For those of
us that live her the email conversation was quite interesting.

I gave all the details regarding my Vanagon, ASME rated Manchester tank,
permanently mounted to the frame of the vehicle and used only for camping
accessories. This was over a few emails where some detailed questions were
asked.

The response I received after supplying the details  was;

"Tanks of this nature shall be inspected every five years by a registered
propane conversion center. Once the inspection is complete the conversion
center will apply a sticker that outlines the inspection and other details.

The attendant at the refill center will or at least should be looking for
this sticker to ensure the tank is safe to fill. Without this sticker the
attendant will may refuse to fill your tank."

I then asked where I could get this certification and got;

"They are few and far between. You may search on our website,* tssa.org *

Performing a search on the internet may assist as well. Typically they are
automotive repair shops."

Which led me to ask was this the same certification for propane powered
vehicles and I got this;

"You are correct, the sticker pertains to the engine tank however as the
tanks are similar TSSA has decided this is the best avenue to take as the
conversion centers are most familiar with these tanks."

This does answer the question quite well as the Vanagon is now covered
under the CSA regulation, ON B149.2-10 Propane storage and handling code,
