Don,
You prol'ly do indeed live in Trollsville!!
Actually, any vehicle is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Look
at the Go-Westy stuff being sold. Somebody out there must think they are
worth something.
In my own case - I have seen my own 88 GL tintop rise in lending value
in my own bank. Currently, my bank would lend $5400 on my van. That
reflects a rise in retail prices. Doesn't mean I would get that if I
sold it - just means that is the way it appears on the market place.
Currently, NADA list the Vanagons as "Classic" automobiles. My own '88
GL lists as follows:
Low Retail - $3000 Average Retail - $4925 - High Retail - $7850
What ever I can sell it for is what its worth, however.
ON these old vehicles about all you can do is put it out there with and
asking price and see what happens. NADA is a guide - not gospel.
One thing, though. In selling/dealing/living with a Vanagon - it can get
pretty weird in the market place. You can never tell if someone is going
to laugh you off the planet when you tell them price, or pullout the bag
of gold nuggets. Vanagon People are a strange bunch. Fine folk - but
strange when it comes to wanting to have possession of such a beast - or
maybe the beast has possession of them!!
When deriving a selling price - I always remember what a successful used
car dealer told me once -"Regardless of all of what else is wrong, if it
has a working differential in it - it's worth $500". So it gets down to
operation vs appearance. Of course there are those who say looks are
everything. But if you think that way - buy all the flash and dash - and
two blocks down the street off the car lot the transmission falls out of
the car - you may think better of your philosophy. BTDT - looked good,
sounded good - 1200 miles later I was putting in a new transmission.
About 5000 miles after that - a new engine. All this was long before I
and the Vanagon came to an understanding. Now I would not have anything
else.
ok. Getting late, still hung over from a full day of fishing yesterday
out in the hot Alabama sun - and I'm beginning to ramble a bit. Time to go.
Later.
