Jeff,
The point I was trying to make is that you don't need to get into the
crevices for sound-deadening; you only need to cover a relatively small
area, about 25%, of the metal to kill the metal garbage can sound. This
makes it a lot easier to clean an area of metal and stick some strips of
your favorite sound deadening material to it. You just want to be sure the
surface is clean and that there's no moisture under the sound deadening
material.
