My understanding is that the AC system and ISV are linked so that when
the AC is "ON" the ISV and it's control box change signals to kick up
the RPM to sustain the load on the engine - otherwise he engine would
stall. On my 88 GL I can feel the AC cycle on and off at lower speeds
as the systems loads and unloads the engine. AC''s typically take 3 to 5
horsepower to drive them and that's a lot out of a Wasserboxer unless
you are turning the RPMs to keep the horsepower output high. At the
bottom of RPMS - 1500 or below - on my van with the *ISV not working -
the engine stalls. So I have to turn the AC off for the engine to idle.
Turn it on when I go again. Aggravating in city driving - stop and go
traffic. I wouldn't say it's a relay if the AC works otherwise. Could be
- but I don't think so.
Can't speak to the seal. The one under the big crank pulley? or the one
behind the transmission?? The one behind the transmission is actually
called a Flywheel Seal according to Bentley.
