Jim.. it would never be smart to run a hot, HOT ! .....12 volt at-at-times wire 16 or whatever feet unfused, then fuseit at the downstream end.

the entire wire would hot at all times and subject to shorting with no protection. I mean.... like, think about it.

I have 'what was a nice' 85 GLthat burnt to a crisp exactly this way.
