I used that stuff on my '82 (diesel -> gas conversion) back in 2000. It did work, damped the tinny sound on the panels. It isn't the be all and end all for sound reduction but it does help. When I stripped that van (was in an accident) I found various degrees of adhesion. Where it stuck, it really stuck, but on some panels it had sagged. I did have problems when I was driving the van with some of it sagging in the front doors and grabbing the window when it was rolled down. I put that down to poor install, not getting all of the wax off the interior of the metal skin.

But do beware, make sure you have degreased the metal where you want to stick the stuff too, especially the walls where heat from the sun will exacerbate poor adhesion.

About any off gassing smell from the asphalt based material - there was a bit initially, but the smell went away after about a week.
