David, if you are in California now, you will need the special "California
only" aftermarket catalytic converter that is much more expensive than the
standard aftermarket unit.

 As far as mufflers go I usually like to use the Dansk/JP Group units as
they seem like the best made, and the quietest.  The other guy was asking
about using a freer flowing muffler.  I used these for many years (S&S
header version) and I found no real boost in power or economy, but they
were definitely louder and more annoying at highway speeds.  I know some
people like annoying road noises (big knobby tires, loud or tinny exhaust
sounds) but I sure don't especially on long trips where the noise,
vibration, and harshness can cause fatigue and extra tiredness.  I would go
with a Dansk/JP Group muffler, and just enjoy driving and looking at the
world around you.

 Everyone is going to look your way because you are driving a weird hippy
bus.  You don't have to make some extra noise to get attention.
