As of June 1 New York also requires original equipment or the CARB approved Cats. Any state that has adopted CARB rules has or will probably have similar laws.

David, if you are in California now, you will need the special "California only" aftermarket catalytic converter that is much more expensive than the standard aftermarket unit.

As far as mufflers go I usually like to use the Dansk/JP Group units as they seem like the best made, and the quietest. The other guy was asking about using a freer flowing muffler. I used these for many years (S&S header version) and I found no real boost in power or economy, but they were definitely louder and more annoying at highway speeds. I know some people like annoying road noises (big knobby tires, loud or tinny exhaust sounds) but I sure don't especially on long trips where the noise, vibration, and harshness can cause fatigue and extra tiredness. I would go with a Dansk/JP Group muffler, and just enjoy driving and looking at the world around you.

Everyone is going to look your way because you are driving a weird hippy bus. You don't have to make some extra noise to get attention.
