If the plastic is broken, you can use a fender washer and a regular one
together to at least put some support on the other corners.

|Subject: AC Switch is fixed
|
|So my first Vanagon repair - at 72 not as limber as I should
|be but got it done. I replaced the AC switch on the dash. To
|gain access had to remove the instrument cluster. There were
|instructions on GoWesty for doing that.
| I noticed that due to broken plastic only two diagonal screws (of the
|four) are holding the cluster. The switch it self has five
|push on connectors that came off the old switch with great
|difficulty. I took them off one at a time and immediately
|connected them to the new switch so I would get them in the
|right position. Then there are two wires soldered to the pot
|that sets the temp. Had to hunt up my soldering iron and did that.
| With some difficulty I got everything put back together and
|viola it works. I now have all the speeds for the fan. I can
|see where the old switch was fried. Ready for nap.

|P.S. What an interesting place to put a master cylinder and
|reservoir! :-)
