It can be done it just takes some money.

I have 'heard' that Smallcar in Tacoma http://www.smallcar.com/index.php can put an in dash AC unit in, you'd need to talk to them about it. Here is a story about a guy putting an after market AC in his Vanagon, http://sites.google.com/site/blakeheinlein2/vanagon-airconditioning . The link is still good.
