55 watt backup light?!! I assume this is in an add-on light, and not in the stock housing. It could be getting too hot in there though. Try moving the connection a bit to clear and filling it with high temp silicone.

At the time, I didn't realize that this is a standard H3 bulb which can be found at your local FLAPS.

I purchased a spare Hella bulb. It appears to have the same potential flaw as the original unlabeled bulb. Some pics:

Easy fix but and the bulb itself may be just fine, but have to wonder about bulb longevity given what appears to be lazy workmanship or poor tooling design.
