While you passed (yea) the emissions test just barley there are some thoughts to consider. Of the pollutants from combustion NOx is one of the nastiest do to its contributions to smog and various health issues. When thinking of why VW never used one of the gasoline I4 engines in a US Vanagon I can only think that NOx control was the main issue. Most likely they would have had to add EGR, more catalyst, and go for the complete testing and certification thing. Probably at the next testing you may need a new Cat. In an ideal world the NOx reading should be close to zero. Anything over 200 indicates you are making too much or the after treatment is not working as it should.

Yep we are legal for two more years. passed with out any hassle. We are in smog 2 area here in the  Northern San Joaquin Valley so we use fixed rollers on rear tires. sniffer in exhaust and fuel evap. test in which they pressurize the fuel tank to 13 lbs.for about 10mins. I was wondering what I could do to bring down my NOX measurement which was 1069 at 15Mph and 414 at 25 Mph? The max at 15 is1076 and 1103 at 25 Mph this is on a two year old cat that I bought from Van Café. I have 80,000 miles on a Tiico engine which is running fine with no other problems that I can see. I use 91octane because it is a high compression engine. Thanks, Bill Witz
