There are other VW/Audi 4 cyl cars that use an external rad fan resistor
but none with such a large resistor matched to such a large fan motor.
They had the resistor mounted to the fan shroud in the flow of air.

The best match that I know of the mid+ 80s Audi 5000/100/200 with 5cyl.

These had a large flat rad fan resistor assembly that screwed flat
against the frame rail near the radiator, 3 wires to make a low and
medium speed like the Vanagon A/C model. I have long figured on using
these if the supply of Vanagon/Eurovan resistors went away completely.
Now it looks like the Audi part is gone first. I have a couple
squirreled away from when they were cheap and easy to find.
