More likely it is a failed main shaft ball bearing and/or the gear carrier housing. The longer it is run the worse the damage will be. The broken 3-4 slider hubs are more of an issue with the water boxers mostly due to the increased power and sustained higher speeds.

A friend has an 82 with this condition. That would be the classic failed 3-4 slider hub? Is it bad to continue driving like this? Will it do more damage making for a more expensive repair in the end?

Thanks, Edward
