There's a Samba post on this by someone who drove from Philly to see it and says it is consumed with rust.     ************************** In case anyone saw this one- or is thinking of going to check it out...let me save you the trouble... I drove 5hrs to see it from Philly to Boston. Not happy. '89 Westfalia GL- red, 150k- runs great. http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype...listType=1 So, guy was selling for an old family friend. It looks great in the pictures and even upon driving up to it- original paint is still shiny. I asked specifically if there was any rust on the van, several times to make sure. I was told it only had a few small spots with light surface rust. So we drove up 5 hrs and were happy since he was a used lot/ garage and said he could possibly take our trade- an '03 jeep liberty. We could get out of selling that ourselves and get on with a full camper. Well- allow me to warn you all- van is full of RUST and pretty much the entire bottom of van ALL AROUND is ROTTING OFF! The sliding door almost fell off as the bottom track nearly fell off at the weld. The rear bumper is not attached as the rear panels are now a good 6-8inches shorter due to rot. Bubbles all around most windows. Rot under front carpets next to seats where seatbelts anchor. Needs to be totally stripped and maybe, maybe, if you are patient enough and wealthy enough can this thing be saved. I hope someone saves it from a certain demise. The interior was in awesome shape and engine was in good running order. Such a shame for a full camper to have such a bad case of rot. We salvaged day by getting a bite in boston before return trip home. Good luck- could be a good deal if you really want to undertake the project but certainly negotiate the price!!! ***************************  Stephen ________________________________ From: Miguel Pacheco <mundopacheco@GMAIL.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Sent: Monday, August 12, 2013 2:18 PM Subject: Re: Massachusetts Westy for sale I called the dealer...this van has 163K miles, 25K in receipts (and asking only 8K?) and does have rust as suspected. The most rust on the van is over the DS rear fender. There is also rust over the PS fender and all along the rockers. He said it is mechanically sound and drives well....of course. To me it is overpriced when considering the rust and the risk of buying 'unseen.'
