Prof. McNeely -- you are indeed correct in indentifying the river as the Des Chutes. Your friend, who was an "[...] avid fly fisherman" accurately labeled it as "[...] the 'Devil's Chute River,' for the impossibility of wade fishing." You write that he said that "[...] the first time he tried to fish it, he stepped into fast, deep water, flailed himself back to the bank and clambered up."

And yup, yeah, that's where I hope to yank water up from using my highly-complicated water-pumpeage rig.

And those of you who josh -- yes josh! -- at my plan to extract potable water from the Deschutes river using hoses and pumps and Other High Technologies are invited to visit my camp site on the eastern bank of the river and see how quickly your puny 1/4'' inch rope and canvas water buckets and your State Park "Gee -- there's a hose bib right down the road" expectations die hard out here in the High Desert.

I offer a PINT (yes, a pint) of whisky and a fine, fine, camping site to those who that might arrive on the 9th and depart on the 13th and those who might arrive on the 16th through the 2nd.

Mrs Elliott is coming up for the weekend

So between the 13th and the 16th, best not to be here.
