The 1.9 and syncros get the threaded sensor. 2.1 with the plastic t-stat housing get the push in. Real late and dealer replacement push in uses a different electrical connector. The newer connector works much better. These sensors never go bad, just the connection or the ground has too much resistance for the sensor to work properly.

What I need is the Temp II sensor (not the gauge sensor). That is what I ordered from Bus Depot. It's Meyle part 314 136 2102 and has a BLUE connector and a golden shiny probe at the other end like http://www.busdepot.com/0280130026.
The part I removed is on the drivers side of the thermostat housing and has a BLUE connector but the other end is completely different. Its a large round probe like http://www.busdepot.com/025906041a
Did I get the wrong part or did I remove the wrong sensor.? That is what I need to know now.
If I removed the wrong sensor, can anyone tell me where the correct sensor is?

OK, removed the old temp II sensor and it looks NOTHING like my replacement. Now I am completely stumped. The old one has a large shiny round thing on the end about 3/4 inch diameter. The new one has just a shiny golden probe thing about 3/4 in long and 1/4in diameter.
Does anyone have a clue what I have and need to do?
This was supposed to be a simple quick job!
I will have to reinstall the old sensor for now as the new one does not even seal the hole.

The clip slides into place, sideways to the sensor. There should be a
little loop sticking out, about 1/2" across. Pull that loop out sideways.

All my screwdrivers are too big, I tried using a slim nail and a small allen wrench. I cannot see the clip, so I don't know how much room I have to insert the tool. I'm also worried that I will either break or bend the clip or it will fly off never to be seen again. Already the sensor seems very loose but the clip is still on there. Is this a standard clip I could find in a hardware store? This would be so easy if the van was up on a lift but its really difficult from above.
