perhaps your new one is and gague temperature sensor , and the one you are replacing is Temp Sensor II that talks to the ecu.

the ideal work cycle involves removing the suspect part first, during which you might discover that the real problem is poor wire contact, or that you need a new o-ring there ... or anything else that might show up. 'Then' get the parts you need. plus ..you can match your new one to the old one.

you also need to babysit parts people sometimes, ones that are not familiar with vanagons. there is sometimes confusion about Temp Sensor II and the guage temp sensor. Try to get Temp Sensor II for a Syncro sometime in a foreign parts store ... a suppossidly good VW-familiar parts store was flat unable to look up Temp Sensor II for a syncro for me once. ( on a syncro it's not the plug-in style with o-ring like you have, it's a screw-in threaded type since a syncro has an aluminum t-stat housing. )

Ordering online can work well since you often see what the part you are ordering looks like ( I highly recommend Van Cafe ) ... and if the supect area is dissassembled first.. then you have in your hand, exactly what you are looking for and know what it looks like.

jacking up the LF corner of the van even a few inches makes it pretty easy to work from below. The old one has a large shiny round thing on the end about 3/4 inch diameter. The new one has just a shiny golden probe thing about 3/4 in long and 1/4in diameter. > Does anyone have a clue what I have and need to do? > This was supposed to be a simple quick job! > I will have to reinstall the old sensor for now as the new one does not even seal the hole. > > David ('87 Wolfsburg) > > > > > ________________________________ > From: mark drillock <mdrillock@COX.NET> > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Sent: Saturday, August 24, 2013 9:40 AM > Subject: Re: Replacement of Temp II sensor > > > The clip slides into place, sideways to the sensor. I'm now on my third attempt after giving up twice. I've tried just about every tool in my toolbox to remove the clip. All my screwdrivers are too big, I tried using a slim nail and a small allen wrench. I cannot see the clip, so I don't know how much room I have to insert the tool. I'm also worried that I will either break or bend the clip or it will fly off never to be seen again. Already the sensor seems very loose but the clip is still on there. Is this a standard clip I could find in a hardware store? This would be so easy if the van was up on a lift but its really difficult from above. >> >> David ('87 Wolfsburg) >> >> >> >>
