Vanagon transmissions seem to suffer from broken parts and beaten housings
and choice of lubricant is not going to fix this. To protect gears and
bearings you want a GL-5 or GL-6 lubricant. Some synthetics can offer better
protection and most of them are more stable long life fluids. You can also
consider going to higher viscosity. Amsoil makes a 75-110 gear oil that is a
great compromise for the Vanagon boxes.

If  you don't deal with winter weather you can also use 80w-140.

Any suggestions on heavier transaxle lube when pulling a trailer/loaded
heavy? I just want to know if its a good or bad idea for my 4 speed.
