Both clips are metal and identical. I only saw one clip initially, but when I removed that one, I still could not pull the sensor out. So I felt round the back again and felt a second clip. When I removed that one, the sensor came out easily.

that's odd.
what is stock, if you are talking about the u-shaped sensor retainer clip ..is one single metal slide-in U shaped clip.
Genuine VW replacement ones these days are plastic.
is yours metal or plastic ?
perhaps someone jammed in two.
be careful as the thin plastic the clipengages with can easily break.
Actually ...the entire plastic thermostat housing on an 87 Westy can easily warp, almost melt and generally fail.
If old , like 20 yrs old ... ....they can be quite ready to just break in various ways.
those o-rings ....they don't seal well if pretty old .

Ok, I finally got the clips out (TWO identical ones). No-one ever mentioned two clips! Used a 2" long screwdriver. I would imagine reinstalling the clips will be a pain because I have no idea where the second one goes. -David ________________________________ From: mark drillock <mdrillock@COX.NET> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Sent: Saturday, August 24, 2013 9:40 AM
Subject: Re: Replacement of Temp II sensor The clip slides into place, sideways to the sensor. There should be a
little loop sticking out, about 1/2" across. Pull that loop out sideways. Mark David M wrote:
>Still not having any luck replacing this d*mn thing. I'm now on my third attempt after giving up twice. I've tried just about every tool in my toolbox to remove the clip. All my screwdrivers are too big, I tried using a slim nail and a small allen wrench. I cannot see the clip, so I don't know how much room I have to insert the tool. I'm also worried that I will either break or bend the clip or it will fly off never to be seen again. Already the sensor seems very loose but the clip is still on there. Is this a standard clip I could find in a hardware store? This would be so easy if the van was up on a lift but its really difficult from above. David ('87 Wolfsburg)
