Agreed....this is the best fix for floppy standard Vanagon mirrors.  A pin inserted in cross drilled hole; and it doesn't have to be perfect through diameter.  I used a 1 inch x 1/8 dia stainless dowel pin secured with a dab of expoxy; a spring roll pin would also work.  Or a nail...etc.  Rich San Diego ________________________________ From: Stuart MacMillan <stuartmacm@GMAIL.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Sent: Friday, September 6, 2013 6:59 PM Subject: Re: Okay -- is there a real fix for floppy mirrors? Been through this on old and new mirrors.  My new ones flopped too, and after repeatedly tightening as much as possible, I put a bit of that sanding mesh used in drywall sanding between the hemisphere and the socket.  Holds at 65 mph in a headwind now and is still adjustable. The pin you are talking about is to hold the stud into the mirror once you pull it out, and once that happens you are done.  Drive it back in and drill through the base of the mirror through the stud and insert a pin of some sort.  I think I used a cut nail, but the sophisticated fix is a roll pin, and seal the hole with black silicone. Then you can tighten with as much force as you want! What I really want is power mirrors! Other than buying and installing power mirrors. Yes, this subject has been done to death but I'm not getting anywhere. I've tried the garden hose washer trick. I've tried using some high-tack gasket compound. I'm about at the stage of gumming everything together with contact cement. Is there anything that actually works? Someone wrote about drilling a hole and driving in a pin or something. Not that I don't mind seeing the rear tire in the passenger side mirror. Except when looking to see if I can change lanes. -- Jack "Rocket j Squirrel" Elliott 1984 Westfalia, auto trans, Bend, Ore.
