fwiw ..I hit a large deer once in jillions of miles of driving. He came out of my left , like a missile......no warning ..suddenly there is a large thing coming in from the left directly across my path. Wasn't like there was a chance to see him on theside of the road at all. I had a millisecond to take any action ..I braked hard and turned left a little to go behind him.....hit his rear end anyway ..lots of damage ...didn't find the deer in the dark anyway. I forget if I had deer whistlers onthe car or not. They 'might' work. It's hard to tell if they work or not. I don't currently have any on any of my cars.

Cows..one time I was driving through a herd in Nevada on a dirt road. Most of the cows scattered, but a calf was running parrallel to me on my right. I was going about 25. I sped a little up to get past him..Without warning he did a fast 'solid left hook turn' right into my right front fender. Be real careful around calves ..they be dumb.

Birds are generally pretty smart about things like this. They have their self-protection radar on all the time, especially when not in flight ..many birds anyway, seems to me. Deer are kinda dumb I think.
