The '87 Westy has been going along with no problems, but I recently noticed a groan when turning the steering wheel off center, then it would quiet again when straight. I discovered that the fluid was down to the MIN mark so topped it off, but about 100 miles later the noise returned and the fluid had dropped again. Looks like some seepage around the hoses on the reservoir but not enough to account for that loss so I crawled under and found on the passenger side of the rack a crusty and torn boot, and the wet shiny metal of the rack and some drips. I expect the other side is not much better but nothing obvious. Can the rack be rebuilt or must I buy a new one? Is it safe to drive meanwhile or do I risk damaging something of the fluid gets too low? Thanks! Stephen |
