Chris, while it is true that you used to be able to buy a crappy GL Vanagon for $500 with a good used motor and transmission, those days are pretty much gone at this point. Even the crappy ones are going for $2000 or more. Most of the time the people are selling because the motor or transmission (or both) are fried. I used to get calls from people wanting to "get rid" of their old Vanagons all the time (like once or twice a week). Now it is down to once or twice a year and it is never a Westy (used to get those pretty regularly). So buying this van, you would want to count the cost. I actually know the guy that has this particular van and he is a mechanic who fixes up and sells Westies all the time. So if he doesn't want to deal with this one, there is probably a good reason.
