I can supply that support exhaust rod if you need one. Check to make sure there's not some reason why it wasn't put on ....like broken or stripped stud or whatever.

there is also a horizonaal longer one near the oil filter...I never put those on. Have never found a reason to, and have never seen a problem with that one not installed. I have those too if you want one.

if your gf is driving such that hard braking is needed .. then she's driving too aggressively, or following too close, or not planning ahead. Many people drive that way ... some people so badly so they have to brake aggressively going uphill ! That's more of a California thing though.

you need to swap over entire front spindles to do the upgrade ...like almost 'most' of the front suspension. It's a lot of work. The calipers are single piston sliding caliper style ...they work well. the brake discs are actually smaller in diameter than what you have now. Thicker though I think.

without doing that entire swab you can try other brake pads.. on an 85 of mine I put in Repco semi-metallic brake pads...and they worked noticeably better for a while... then eventually that affect went away , though they still worked plenty well enough, for smart driving.

to make *everything* in the entire van last well ......good driving is all about being SMOOTH .. smooth in every action, braking, shifting, steering, accelerating. Many people are pretty rough on vanagons actually, in my experience.. the vans handle it really well fortunately, and they will last so much better driven very smoothly. Develope a good FEEL for every control input.

lol...I take people for a drive and I start doing my normal thing.. which might include, for example.....slowing down and turning-in smoothly for a corner .. all the while blending all the control inputs very smoothly together , , including down shifting, steering and braking ...all 'blended' together and overlapped, and very smooth. It's very rewarding to drive that way.

I'm told probably broken or lost during a muffler change. it is a fairly short rod which attaches to a stud at each end. The studs look to be in different orientations I think a 90 degree turn. I can reach the location by finding the coil on the drivers side of the engine and reaching down along the motor. > > The second part is the break parts needed to upgrade my original 1985 breaks to the 86 to 91 version. I'd love to have more breaking power as this seems to be the biggest concern of my drivers. yes, even more of a concern than the low power! It seems like even on a short trip my girlfriend three or 4 times will throw out her arm to keep me in my seat as she presses the breaks. Exactly how this small woman's arm is to save me I don't know but she seems to think it will help. I must admit not knowing exactly why she is doing this makes my heart skip a beat almost every time. > > > I'm under the impression these are parts I'll need to get from a parts van as they are not manufactured any longer. > > I'm also looking for healthy replacement rubber boots for the Fuel injectors and Temperature sensor.
