Subject: Fuel gauge or sender question

OK, for those who have seen this one in person or know of someone first hand, here goes; If the fuel gauge goes straight past E, I mean, it's hanging straight down is it the gauge or the sender that's mostly bad? Oh, every once in awhile (3-4 times a year), the needle will go almost to half full right after I get a full tank and then drops back down again after driving a bit.

I'm PO'd at myself for not changing the sender when I did a 100% fuel line and clamp swap two years ago. Wondering if I can just ease the tank down and swap the sender out (if need be) and not have to drop the whole tank. Aside from the filler neck, I left plenty of slack (unlike VW) so I could take it down and not tear all the little hoses.

Thanks,
