My Golf TDI has "quite a bit" less engine braking effect than the gas engine Golfs I've owned, especially at lower RPMS. On a downhill of 8 or 9 % I will need to be in 3rd gear with engine "screaming" at 3500-4000 rpms to hold the speed at a reasonable hwy speed.

It's where I save a lot of fuel on my commute, btw. I have several rural stoplights that I can see from quite a distance, where I can often avoid stopping by coasting in gear using no fuel, slowing down very gradually.
