Well, at 6'4" I used to be in the same situation. I had to sleep up top because my daughter always had this irrational fear that the top was going to fall on her in the middle of the night. I cut a 12" wide board and and covered it with foam and fabric, making an extension piece for the upper bunk. I never had an issue for room with my size 13 feet, but I did often find my pillow on the floor below several times a night. The daughter is now 20, in college, and no longer goes camping with me, so I now get the lower (and far more comfortable) bed.
