Subject: Speedometer Cruise Control Pickup Hole: '81 and '85
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hey people.

Had a great 17 day trip through OR and WA. Other than a really noisy fuel pump on hot days after climbing steep grades, (i.e. to get to Anthony Lake OR), no issues save for a speedometer failure. (grinding sound, displayed WAY high speed). At this point I may swap in a spare speedometer, but IIRC, my spare '85 speedometer made noise too. But. It has a mount point for a VSS pickup.

Image of '81 and '85 speedometers:

Closer view of the '81:

My VSS pickup (as used for cruise control on some Vanagons), currently installed on my now broken speedometer, screws to same holes as shown in '85 speedo. I had thought maybe the mount hole positions were the same on the '81 and '85 shown, but not so. In fact I can't see how one would fit though the image shows a cutaway and holes. Not sure for what though.

Is there a cruise control pick up (hall) that mounts in the early model speedometers?

Thanks, Neil.

PS. After removing the speedo cable en route to home, and sustaining higher speeds gas pedal 3/4 way down later in that leg of trip, my MIL light would come on quite often as it did before. Prior, I had thought the addition of a VSS was NOT the cure for the MIL light coming on at higher speeds but it seems maybe it was. This being Motronic 2.9 engine management on a Jetta 2.0
