Wow! Not exactly cheap, either. In my experience, exhaust systems are an excellent modification to gain performance from most motors. I've almost always gained HP and fuel economy without any other changes, depending of course on the efficiency of the stock system you are modifying.. Also changing the parameters of the engine management (re-mapping, etc) will really maximize any gains you make with the "traditional" Hot Rodding alterations like better fuel or exhaust flow...but most motors will still respond with noticeably better performance to installing a well thought-out exhaust system... with no other alterations. I'd say that altering the exhaust without any other changes has no 'downside' except perhaps additional decibels Most other engine mods come with more 'consequences' like diminished dependability or decreased fuel economy.
