Jim, From what I have read here, and been told - it's possible for the auto tranny to be rebuilt in the home garage with tools found in most ordinary tool boxes. This does not include the transaxle itself. That's another horse.

As for the manual tranny - never rebuilt one myself - but was on hand when it was done. Saw two - and the mechanic used jigs in the re-build to get things right. That's special tooling that most of us wouldn't have. I would plan on sending it out to have it rebuilt.
